Psychological effects of such lengthy illness include the tendency to become egocentric, demanding, and dependent, and to use regression as a coping mechanism. Also discussed are the effects of pain and the failure to improve on the individual’s anxiety level. The effects of hospitalization, depersonalization, dependency, and loneliness are explored. The essentially passive role of the patient and its effect on an individual is also discussed, along with the importance of recognizing the individual as a unique and worthwhile person.
